At Turning Point Centers, we believe that service members deserve to get targeted care that takes into account their unique experiences and meets them where they are on their healing journeys. For this reason, we offer the Service Resiliency Unit at Turning Point, providing culturally informed, trauma-focused care for active-duty service members and veterans.
A Program Built Around Service, Sacrifice, & Healing
The Service Resiliency Unit (SRU) at Turning Point offers personalized, culturally competent care for veterans and active-duty service members who are navigating addiction and mental health concerns. This population has served our country in ways far beyond what most people can imagine, and we are dedicated to now serving them.
Nestled in the foothills of the Wasatch Mountains, our Utah-based treatment centers provide quiet, homelike environments where those who have carried extraordinary responsibility can step away from the stressors of their everyday lives and begin healing from the effects of their experiences.
Why Specialized Care Matters
Due to the experiences they face, military service members and veterans are at a high risk for developing posttraumatic stress disorder and other types of mental health conditions. When left unaddressed, the cumulative impact of deployment, operational stress, critical incidents, and moral injury can cause people to suffer from symptoms of mental health disorders, begin using or abusing substances, have strained relationships, and experience negative physical symptoms that disrupt their daily lives.
The SRU at Turning Point provides tailored care for individuals who are suffering from a range of concerns, including:
- Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), including combat-related, operational, and complex trauma
- Acute stress disorder
- Deployment trauma
- Military sexual trauma
- Depression
- Anxiety
- Bipolar disorder
- Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)
- Moral injury and grief linked to service
- Substance use disorders
By receiving care in a specialized program like the SRU at Turning Point, individuals have the opportunity to work with professionals, many of whom are veterans themselves, who have an understanding of the complexities of military life and the effects the profession can have on a person’s emotions, behaviors, and worldview.
Individualized, Evidence-Based Care
The SRU at Turning Point is not a one-size-fits-all program. When a service member or veteran is admitted to our program, they are paired with a master’s-level primary therapist who works with them to develop a customized plan of care that is built around their history, presenting symptoms, and treatment goals, taking into account the experiences they have had in their military career.
While receiving care in the SRU, clients can benefit from a number of therapeutic interventions, services, and treatment modalities, such as:
- Individual therapy
- Trauma-focused group therapy
- Process and psychoeducational groups
- Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR)
- Brainspotting for trauma processing
- Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)
- Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT)
- Motivational interviewing (MI)
- Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT)
- Family therapy
- Experiential therapies, including art therapy and music therapy
- Mindfulness and meditation practices
- Yoga
- Nutrition education
- Relapse prevention and life skills groups
- Medical oversight from our psychiatric nurse practitioners and medical team
Pillars of the SRU at Turning Point Experience
There are a number of things that set our military-focused program apart.
Cultural competence
Several of our trauma therapists are veterans themselves. That lived experience informs the language they use and the questions they ask. They know not to make assumptions and are sensitive to what clients are going through. Clients don’t have to explain what a deployment felt like, why they still scan a room when they walk into it, or what it means to come home and feel out of place. Our team gets it.
Trauma-focused, evidence-based therapies
The majority of our therapists are trained in eye movement desensitization and reprocessing, and many are trained in brainspotting. Both of these neuroscience-based interventions have proved to be effective in helping people who are suffering from the effects of trauma. Additionally, we implement a variety of evidence-based therapies into our clients’ treatment plans to ensure that they receive a truly comprehensive care experience.
Whole-person, non-12-Step treatment
Our program does not follow the 12-Step model of recovery; however, 12-Step meetings are available for clients who want them. Instead, we integrate various therapies, medication oversight, fitness, nutrition, mindfulness, experiential work, and community into our clients’ care because we believe that healing the mind requires addressing all aspects of a person’s life.
Small, intimate setting
The SRU at Turning Point takes place in a 16-bed residential setting. We intentionally created an intimate space because it can provide psychological safety, allow clinicians to get to know clients deeply, and foster the kind of peer connection that is especially meaningful among those who have served in the military.
Medication-assisted treatment available
For clients who are struggling with opioid use disorder or alcohol use disorder, we offer medication-assisted treatment (MAT), which can include prescriptions for buprenorphine, Suboxone®, Vivitrol, and Campral. These medications are prescribed by our psychiatric providers in coordination with required counseling.
Targeted aftercare planning
Our discharge and aftercare planning begins during the first week of treatment. We help service members identify their long-term treatment goals and guide them through a continuum of care that best supports them in achieving those goals. In collaboration with our clients, we determine what levels of care are most appropriate for meeting their specific needs and work with them to make sure that appropriate resources and aftercare services are set up once their time in our care is complete.
Starting the Conversation
Reaching out for help can often be the hardest step. When you contact the SRU at Turning Point team, you will be connected with an admissions advisor who will truly listen, ask questions, discuss your situation, and help you understand the care options that are available to you. We verify insurance benefits and clarify financial considerations so that you are fully informed before making any decisions.
You showed up when it mattered. Now let us show up for you. The SRU at Turning Point exists to make treatment accessible so that we can meet you exactly where you are on your healing journey.
